What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics is one of the 12 recognized dental specialities. The National Commission on Recognition of Dental Specialities and Certifying Boards defines it as the “dental speciality that involves the diagnosis, prevention, interception and correction of malocclusion, as well as neuromuscular and skeletal abnormalities of the developing or mature orofacial structures.”
Phew. Let’s break that down. Orthodontists like Dr. Carolyn Cronin and Dr. Scott Czarnik attend two to three years of speciality training in an orthodontic residency program after dental school. It’s there that they learn the nuances of safe tooth movement (orthodontics), as well as how to guide dental, jaw and facial development (dentofacial orthopedics).
In the simplest terms, they’re experts in moving teeth and aligning jaws using appliances, including braces, Invisalign®, palatal expanders, etc. Since they also have an in-depth knowledge of the chewing system (i.e., jaw bones, temporomandibular joints, ligaments, muscles) and the entire facial structure, they’re able to create smiles that are functional, healthy and beautiful.
New and Improved Orthodontic Treatments
Gone are the days when a metal band with a bracket was placed around each tooth. Now you can choose clear or metal brackets, virtually invisible aligners and, in some cases, even the color of your appliance.
Our Westminster and Arvada braces combine streamlined brackets with thin, lightweight archwires, making them far less noticeable than they used to be. For those who want to straighten their teeth without braces, Dr. Cronin and Dr. Czarnik are leading Invisalign® and Invisalign Teen providers.
The materials used for both braces and aligners are designed to move teeth faster and more comfortably. You’ll get the smile you’ve always dreamed of and the confidence to show it off!
How Long Does Orthodontic Treatment Last?
Treatment time varies and can last between one and three years, depending on several factors, including your age, treatment method, and how minor or severe your case is. Another big factor in a successful treatment is you! The more involved and diligent you are, the more efficient your treatment will be. For children, receiving interceptive or early treatment can also lead to a quicker treatment time.
If you need a minor touch-up after forgetting to wear your retainer, to address mild cosmetic concerns or to achieve specific goals to support other dental work, such as getting a dental implant, we also offer limited orthodontics. Limited treatment may only take a few months.
How Does Orthodontic Treatment Work?
Orthodontic appliances are made of metal, ceramic or plastic. They can be removable or they can be bonded to the teeth. Regardless of the type of appliance, they all exert constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction to shift the teeth into the proper position. These tooth movements are based on the custom treatment plan designed by Dr. Cronin or Dr. Czarnik.
