Understanding Everything About Orthodontic Treatments
One of the most common questions we get at Cronin & Czarnik Orthodontics is: “How long will I need braces for?” And the truth is—it depends. Every smile is unique, and treatment plans are tailored to each patient’s specific needs and goals. Some people are simply looking for minor cosmetic touchups, while others may require more comprehensive treatment that includes growth guidance, expansion, or even jaw surgery.
Phase 1 vs. Phase 2 Treatment
Orthodontic treatment is often divided into two phases—especially for younger patients.
- Phase 1 Treatment usually begins between ages 7 and 10, while a child still has a mix of baby and adult teeth. The goal of Phase 1 is to address developmental issues early, such as overcrowding, narrow arches, airway, or jaw growth concerns. This phase might involve expanders or partial braces and typically lasts 9 to 12 months.
- Phase 2 Treatment comes later, usually after all adult teeth have erupted. This is what most people think of as “traditional braces.” The goal here is to align all teeth into their ideal positions and optimize bite function. Phase 2 usually takes 12 to 24 months, though it can vary depending on the case.
Some patients may only need Phase 2 or even a shorter course of treatment using clear aligners or limited braces if their needs are minor.
Every Smile Is Different
Treatment time varies depending on a number of factors:
- Complexity of the case – Severe crowding, impacted teeth, or jaw misalignment may take longer to correct.
- Age of the patient – Younger patients often respond faster to treatment, especially during growth spurts.
- Appliances used – Expanders, elastics, or surgical treatments can affect the overall timeline.
- Patient compliance – Wearing elastics, keeping appointments, and maintaining good hygiene all contribute to faster, more successful outcomes.
Some cases take only a few months. Others may require up to 2+ years if more complex. That’s why we always start with a comprehensive consultation—to develop a custom plan for every individual.
