Why Invisalign?

Our Westminster and Arvada Invisalign providers can help you achieve outstanding results. And while, of course, you’ll love the outcome, you’ll also love the treatment itself. Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible, comfortable and convenient. Since you take them out to eat and brush and floss your teeth, there are no food restrictions and maintaining excellent oral hygiene is simple.

Caring for Your Aligners and Your Smile

Even though Invisalign treatment is convenient and features removable aligners, there are still things you’ll have to do to keep your aligners and your smile in excellent shape.

Brushing and Flossing

Your Invisalign aligners fit snugly against your teeth. While this is necessary to deliver the right amount of force, it also means that food, liquid and plaque can get trapped between your aligners and your teeth, increasing your risk of tooth decay and staining.

To prevent this, be sure your teeth are clean when you put your aligners in your mouth. Brush your teeth in the morning, after meals, snacks or sugary drinks, and before bed all throughout your treatment. Continue flossing your teeth once a day.

Eating and Drinking With Invisalign

Since Invisalign aligners are removable, you can eat and drink whatever you’d like during your treatment. That said, it’s important to take your aligners out before eating or drinking anything aside from plain water. Again, food and liquid can get stuck under your aligners, which may eventually cause cavities. Plus, drinking hot beverages like coffee with your aligners in will cause the plastic material to warp, affecting the fit and, ultimately, the pre-planned tooth movements.

How to Clean Invisalign Trays

You’ll find all sorts of advice on how to clean Invisalign aligners. And, yes, you can purchase Invisalign cleaning crystals, special aligner cleaners and even ultrasonic cleaning devices, but these aren’t necessary. The best way to clean Invisalign is to simply brush your aligners with a soft-bristled toothbrush (don’t use toothpaste) and rinse them in lukewarm water. Avoid using hot water.

Brushing your aligners will remove plaque and bacteria to keep them clear and odor-free. Clean your Invisalign trays when you brush your teeth in the morning and before bed. You might also want to rinse your aligners off after eating and before putting them back in your mouth.

If your Invisalign aligners require extra cleaning power, you can also use mild, clear, unscented liquid dishwashing soap when brushing them. Just be sure you remove all of the soap by rinsing it off with lukewarm water before you pop your aligners back in your mouth.

By the time your aligners are really dirty, you’ll be on to a new tray so you don’t really have to deep clean them. But if you want to deep clean Invisalign trays, soak them for about 15 minutes in a DIY solution, such as one part distilled white vinegar mixed with three parts water, and then rinse them thoroughly.

Additional Invisalign Tips
  • Keep your aligners safe by storing them in your Invisalign case whenever you take them out of your mouth.
  • Never leave your Invisalign aligners in a hot car or in direct sunlight for a prolonged period of time when it’s hot outside. The thermoplastic material can warp when exposed to heat.
  • Always save your last Invisalign tray when you begin a new one. If you lose an aligner, depending on where you are in your wear schedule and whether or not the prescribed tooth movements have occurred, you might have to wear your previous tray until you’re able to get a replacement. If an Invisalign aligner is lost, call our office and we’ll let you know if you should stick with your older tray or if it’s okay to jump to your next one.
